Overview

This project explored how UX, gamification, and financial education could increase engagement within Oval Money’s app.

The work was developed collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team as part of a Master’s program, in partnership with Oval Money, Talent Garden Innovation School, and Sketchin.

Context

ATM’s mobile app offered digital ticketing, but season tickets still required physical cards, creating usability friction and unnecessary plastic consumption.
Key constraints

  • High-frequency, high-stakes usage

  • Diverse user base with varying digital confidence

  • Strong need for trust, reliability, and certification

Process & collaboration

The project followed a design thinking approach, with the team working closely through all phases.
Key activities: user and stakeholder research; problem framing and insight synthesis; brainstorming sessions and How Might We questions to reframe challenges.

This collaborative process helped align the team, explore multiple directions quickly, and converge on a shared UX strategy.

My role

UX Designer, contributing across the full process with a focus on:

  • Translating insights into structured user flows

  • Designing interaction patterns for learning and gamification

  • Shaping progression logic and motivation mechanics

  • Supporting the team in turning abstract ideas into testable concepts

My contribution focused on UX structure and clarity, ensuring ideas translated into coherent experiences.

UX Strategy & solution

The redesigned Coach experience was built around progressive learning and motivation.

  • Interactive lessons using micro-content, visuals, and lightweight interactions

  • Cryptocurrency simulator for risk-free learning

  • Milestones and rewards to encourage continued engagement

Outcome

The final deliverable was a high-fidelity interactive prototype used to communicate the concept to Oval stakeholders.

As a result:

  • Oval Money integrated a simulator feature into the new Coach experience, inspired by the project

  • The work demonstrated the value of UX-led education in fintech products

Takeaways

Strong UX outcomes often come from structured collaboration.

Using design thinking methods helped the team align quickly, explore broadly, and converge on solutions that balanced usability, learning, and motivation.
